The Patriot's 48-28 win over the Dolphins today solidified a few things:
1) I didn't think it would happen this year. I really didn't. But the Patriots are fun to watch again. If last week's overtime lose to the Jets sparked the fire of fun, this week sprayed lighter fluid all over it.
2) Matt Cassel will go down in New England sports folklore - no matter what happens throughout the rest of the season. After his second strait 400 yd passing game, including three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground, there's no doubt he'll be a household name and will never have to buy a beer in Boston. Think about it - what was he suppose to do this season? He filled in for arguably one of the most notable and important figures in New England sports history; in a year where revenge and high expectations were ingrained in every fan. "All he has to do is manage the game and not turn the ball over...Please! Just don't let us go 3-13!" That was the thought process of many horrified Pats fans. It was like the team had adopted a six-year-old they had to babysit every Sunday - so they put him off to the side, gave him a lollipop, and told him, "Just sit here - and don't move." Instead, Cassel has been the brightest part of the season. His ability to read the splitting defense and run up the middle for a 12 yard touchdown EVERY TIME is uncanny, his incredible accuracy and rocket arm was unexpected, and this new thing he does called, "Not chucking up INTs" is just great. He's not exactly Tom Brady, and he'll be the first to tell you that. But that distinct look he has back in the pocket has taken on a life of its own and wont be forgotten in Foxborough, no matter what team he chooses to cash in on in the off-season.
3) Wes Welker is the best thing since sliced bread and Troy Brown. After last year, I figured the other team would realize this guy ALWAYS gets ball and ALWAYS cuts towards the inside of the field for an extra four yards... Apparently they haven't. Shhhh........
4) If Sammy Morris could stay healthy, the guy could be great. Notice the "if" and "could"...
5) The Patriots defense couldn't stop my grandmother from breaking into their house, taking their clothes right off their gargantuan bodies, and telling them all they're "Very, very bad boys." They're just soft. Remember in the golden years of Patriot defense when they wouldn't really have the stats to lean on, but you just knew that when they needed a stop, they'd get it? It's getting harder and harder to remember. It wasn't there last year, and it remained our dirty little secret hidden by the record breaking numbers the offense put up. However, now that our own point scoring has come back down to earth, it's become pretty clear how weak this defense really is.
I liked ur article on the pats that was well written ..... however, in this one i just wanted to say PHILLIES 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS!!
