Everyone once in a while I accidentally click the wrong acronym on the ESPN tabs, and I’m brought to the NHL homepage. After my initial, “Ah, crap” response to seeing the URL loading on my search bar, my heart actually flutters as I excitedly remember I can check out Jon Quick’s stats, and more importantly look at pictures of him in his Kings uniform.
It’s not creepy or anything, its just fun seeing a guy who you went hoarse cheering for and felt so close to, make it big. Remembering #29 wear the old UMass Hockey jersey between the rails is something that brings a smile to any fan’s face. The end of the 2006-2007 season will be looked back on and reminisced by fans for years. We’ll share stories and remember when the team came alive in late February; undoubtedly up-roaring animal rights activists across the Northeast with our impassioned killing of the Maine Black Bears. The team played well, hoping on the back of their goalie who let up an average of 2.00 goals while saving 132 shots in four wins, propelling us into our first NCAA tournament. We grew to love the sophomore star, but knew all too well what happens to young talent. His national exposure was not only noticed in Amherst anymore, and not surprisingly he moved on.
I know it’s a new season and we need to focus on the now, but is hard not to get nostalgic about the loss of such a star and fan favorite. I think in honor of the man who helped bring our program to a new level, we as fans need to tell the freshmen stepping into the stands this year who think “quick” is just an adjective, what it really means to UMass Hockey.
